Reagents for the determination of fructosamine levels in blood serum
Diabetic animals have difficulties processing glucose and measuring average glucose levels in animals is difficult to do accurately as blood levels of glucose fluctuate depending on when the animal has last eaten. A better way to determine an animal’s glucose metabolism is to measure Fructosamine, a measurement of essentially ketoamines formed when glucose and protein molecules combine. Monitoring Fructosamine over time, similar to monitoring glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in humans, allows the veterinarian to assess the animal’s glycemic control over a broader time period and therefore the metabolic status of the animal and effectiveness of treatment.
Catachem’s Fructosamine assay reagent is a single, stable liquid formulation with a 24-month shelf life. The assay is based on the ability of ketoamines to reduce a nitroblue tetrazolium dye in alkaline conditions to produce a purple-colored formazan complex. The intensity of this color, as it is formed, is measured spectrophotometrically at 530/550 nm. The assay can be run on a variety of automated clinical analyzers including, Roche, Beckman, Siemens and Abbott equipment.
Specific calibrators and controls are available for the assay. These are also liquid stable materials stored with the reagent in a refrigerator at 2-8C.
The method is linear over a wide fructosamine range from 10 – 1000 µmol/L
No interference is found in the assay from Hemoglobin (up to 100 mg/dL), Triglycerides (up to 1,200 mg/dL) and Bilirubin (up to 4.0 mg/dL)
